Treasure Diving Holidays and More

This was taken on a dive in the Bahamas -- a Crile adventure. Here is Ann Crile, Brian Sherwin, Joan Crile (now in Heaven) with some Bahamians. Jane and Barney were diving when few others did. They went down holding their breaths. They all wore black leotards with a face with teeth on the backsides of the suit to scare away the barracudas!) They made movies by enclosing the camera is a rubber ice bag with a specially made glass cap. The movies of these adventures were shown all over the world during the Criles many trips --- and this was their hobby-profession as well as being world famous surgeon, writers, etc. ( I have to brag that I set the music to those movies!) On a dive with Pete Peterson from the Smithsonian they brought up the wooden steering wheel from one of Columbus' ships (Santa Pinta?) which you can see on display at the Smithsonian. They were pioneers (the Cousteau's of USA). Ed Link, who invented the Link Trainer -- a pilot training machine used for WW II pilots -- stopped by the Sherwin pool to show the Criles his invention which was the first scuba diving equipment (before Jacque Cousteau's)..  (Years later Peter Sherwin would oversee the building of a state of the art version as Chief Pilot of Ozark Airlines.)    The Crile's book, "Treasure Diving Holidays" is standard reading for many a young marine archeologist.

When, years later I was president of the Bermuda National Trust, I made an official visit to Colonial Williamsburg to arrange an archeological project in Bermuda. The younger archeologists warned me about the hot tempered Archiologist Emerntitos, a man at the top of his field. I sat beside the intimidating  old man at a dinner. Overcome with shyness I asked him if by chance he knew of my aunt and uncle. "Are you kidding," he barked, "Jane and Barney Crile of Treasure Diving Holidays!" So Williamsburg came to Bermuda on  a number of "digs" in our historic buildings, and assisted us in putting together the Trust's dynamic program of Bermuda's cultural history. Thanks, Jane and Barney!

A note on Barney Crile probably forgotten: In 1947 some statehood for Puerto Rico extremists broke into the public galleries of the United States House of Representatives and shot five Congressmen. At the time Cleveland was snowed in in a huge blizzard. Fire trucks were called out to clear the runways so a plane could rush Barney to Washington to direct the operations that saved the lives of the Congressmen! And that's  just one reason why the signature building of the Cleveland Clinic (now Cleveland's largest employer) is named the Crile Building!

Some family we are!

Greg McIntosh, who was a young member of the diving group adds the following notes: (Actually the leotards were to keep is from getting sunburned. Each child had a different "face" on his or her rear so that Barney and Jane could instantly identify one from the other). About the rubber bag the camera was in: It was actually a modified bag used by anesthesiologists in the operating room. It is fitted between the tanks of various gasses and the mask over the patent's mouth and nose. Clinic machinists created the lens fitting for the front of the camera and fashioned a clamp to secure the open sam at the rear - used for inserting and withdrawing the camera from this improvised underwater case with it's specially made glass cap.

Sam Halle, Francis Sherwin and the three ladies

Frannie (Mrs. John) Sherwin, Anne Halle Little and Margaret Halle Sherwin enjoying a bit of sun on a cold Cleveland day wrapped in their fashionable coats from Halle Bros. Who is in the pram?

looking quite dapper for  a father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great great grandfather!

Francis McIntosh Sherwin --looking very much like a McIntosh-- his mom -- on a leather sofa in the fabeled family library. Behind him are etchings by Frank Benson of ducks and hunters; Benson was an early American impressionist who loved to paint his daughters on Monahegan Island in Maine. Look him up on the internet. His work is in the art museum in Boston and elsewhere and is highly prized. Ned Johnson, emperor if Fidelity, recently bought a Benson for $1 million. But allow mw to brag: I bought a huge Helen Framkenthaller painting some years ago and today in the Cleveland Art Museum and it too is worth the same and more! At some point I will tell you about my modern art collection................

Ann Halle Little, Plot

This was taken in 1937.   Ann married Bob when I was about four.  The wedding was at the Halle house on Harcourt drive at the top of Cedar Hill. I remember the event well, because I leaned over to Sam and Gandi's dog, a dacshaunt (spelled wrong - wiener dog) who was lying on his back waiting for a pat, and he peed on me and my grey flannel shorts. I was very embarrassed! Now I know that children are easily embarrassed and mortified. So I do my best to prevent that. I did so bringing up my two godsons -- Adam and David Outerbridge. They are now 30 and  I will introduce you to them soon.

Our Family circa 1937

This is Ann Crile. Adorable!

This is Maude Doolitte (Doody), a school teacher in Brookline, MA who taught some of the Kennedys.  Jack Kennedy wrote her a letter when he became a Senator thanking her for guiding him in his early years.  She spent summers at Halle Farm teaching the Halles about nature-- there's our love for the birds, ferns, mushrooms and all the other delights of the ravine at Halle Farm. The farm today is Lake Metro Park Penitentiary Glen and exhibits the cultural history of our family. I could tell you lots more!

Here is my mom, Margaret Halle Shewin cooling out in out Russian Pine Georgian pannel library -- the scene of several generations of shanagans, misbehavior, romancing (Kate and Toby -- now 50'the wedding anniversary), and major partying, among many other things. Oh the things I could telll you!
This is Bobby McIntosh (Greg's mom)and Bernie Towell. Bobby left Cleveland to create one of the great horse breeding farms in horse country, Warenton,VA ,Jackie Kennedy' territory. She later moved the whole thing, lock stock and barrel, to Florida. Her horse van had a tack room in it. Bernie and Eleanor created Tim Towell (now Ambassador), my pal Gary (who invented his own language ("I want to marry a girl with a crunchy driveway" -- meaning a mansion with a pebbly driveway and a trust fund). I never really new Cynthia, but I knew she was beautiful.
Here are just a few of what I have on my computer all set to post. Do you want to see more? And I might tell a story or two. These folks had fun and lived wonderful lives! I'll just brush on the scandals and misdeeds...........

Tim Sherwin

Hi everyone,

Great fun, thanks Dennis and Halle. Well I am going to be 40 next year. Still living in Cleveland Heights with my perfect wife Missy and 3 kids - Max (8), Oliver (5) and Abigail (2). I started a software company 10 yrs ago - http://www.cardinalcommerce.com/ - that is going great. We work with internet merchants, e.g. Dell.com, Continental.com, ToyrUs, Polo, CircuitCity, etc enabling secure payments and the ability to do mobile commerce. I work closely with payment brands like Visa, MC, PayPal, Google, BillMeLater, etc. So, I at least feel cool. Dennis was an early supporter and investor. Thanks Dennis. I would like to say I hope to make him rich, but I think I am too late! J... I don't think when I go public that there is much I can do to improve his backyard (a beach bay in Bermuda).

Missy and I went to an 80's Prom party some friends threw last year...not our normal dress.

Look forward to hearing from everyone. BTW, my best email address to use is tims@cardinalcommerce.com or sherwintim@gmail.com .

Hi all.

Great idea and love the sense of family. It reminds me of Pops, Aunt Katy, Aunt Mag, Aunt Jane and Aunty Ann talking on the phone once a week together.

I am in Southwest Harbor Maine for the summer and excited to see Pam and Tyler in a couple of weeks. Ashley and her family are here for the summer as well with Walter and family along with Marion and her clan arriving at some point hopefully for a brief visit. Our ten grandchildren doing many summer sports so very busy.

Will try and get a photo of my 70th celebration at the Four Seasons...XXXOOO to all

Halle Sherwin

Hi!

I've been living in LA for almost 10 years. Sam and I never see each other and Pam and I are better, but not by much! We went for 7 years before seeing each other and finally just decided to spend the 4th of July in Bermuda since we couldn't seem to get it together to see each other in LA.

I work in television and just shot a sizzle piece for a reality design show I created, thought I'd let you know how it went:

I have Christopher Ciccone, Madonna's brother as the host, and 2 design assistants. He refers to as his "minions"...Everything was organized and ready to go until 11P the night before...

1) One of the design assistant calls night before, tells me she passes out at gate, throws up on herself, calls me from the ambulance to say she's missed her flight won't be in for first location shoot!

2) Van with all of "before" room items and "after" room items breaks down in the middle of the desert, blows transition on the way to 2nd location at 7A. Van pulled over by cops for smoking, Van has to get 2 tow trucks to be towed to location, 2 1/2 hours late.

3) Craft services girl gets pulled over by cops for speeding from location 1 to location 2, gets ticket, delays her set up. No food when crew and talent arrive.

4) Same design assistant splits her leg open on set, goes back to hospital, gets staples, shows back up on set on cruches and in a hospital gown and jacked up on vicoden singing "Lola" (the old song from the 50's) yes, all of that is on tape!
